ONYX - NORTHERN LEAGUE FIXTURES 2008/2009
Team Captain - Brian Bolger
Match Report - Onyx v BBC Lions
Monday 17th November
Onyx 6, Lions 4
Onyx appear to have a hoodoo over the table topping Lions, for in a repeat of last years effort, we earned a well deserved 6-4 victory in the sun at Javea Green.
In order that I may finish on a high note I will get the bad news out of the way first.
We were stuffed out of sight in the raffle (what idiot crowed about our fine form in raffles in his report last week?) and lost the friendlies 2-1. Our one friendly success ( we only had one win in the raffle as well!!! ) was on rink seven where our resident stand up comedian Phil Harding, along with a brace of Lutz’s were rarely troubled on their way to a 26-11 win.
On rink two, Ian (the reluctant orator) Jackson, Mike Wynne and Sadie (ignore the quiet ones at your peril) Carr did it again. After a dodgy start they kept the red bit of the scoreboard ticking along end after end, coming out 22-17 victors. One wonders if Gill (with a G) Johnson was watching from the top of the Millennium Stadium, although as she and Gerald are still celebrating their wedding anniversary…. perhaps they had better things to do!!!
David White must have run over a black cat recently, for he drew both rink three and one of BBC’s plum sides – The Croft’s and Tony Lawley. Whilst never at their best, David’s trio of Barry Jowett and his better half ( David’s that is, not Barry’s !!! ) Judy, hung on to the Lions coat tails, eventually losing 16-13. But for a wick here, and a rub there, it could have been oh so different!
After last weeks heroics, it was inevitable that Mick (the shy and reserved one) Brownlow, Bill (a few touchers) Garrett and Jill (with a J and an occasional B!) Nobbs should come unstuck. However in spite of a poor start, and with the shot difference in mind, they never gave up and stayed within sight, only losing 23-15.
At this point your scribe can confirm that Sparky Warky’s Mystical Accoutrements Store has once more agreed to sponsor this weeks report ….. Why? Yes you have guessed it…. Brian Bolger the Onyx resident wizard is back!! Rink six was positively awash with lightning flashes, clouds of theatrical smoke and rabbits being pulled from hats, as Brian led George Holman and Dave (fresh out of Hogwarts) Wood to a stunning 32-10 victory. A win so emphatic that the overall shot difference was secured, thereby earning a further two points for Onyx.
So with 9 games played Onyx have 47 points. Not a bad haul considering we have played only 2 of our 10 fixtures against the five sides currently propping up the league.
Next Thursday, we meet up with our friends from Opal. Bragging rights at stake there then team!!

Match Report - Onyx v Finca Guila
Thursday 13th November
Greetings dear readers, and welcome back to another instalment of unmitigated drivel. I must say that judging from the feedback I am receiving, you are all as mad as me. This I find most comforting from the confines of my padded cell!
Well, we swept the board this week, more sun, good company, an excellent meal, yet another comprehensive win in the raffle and 6 hard earned points.
A complete aside here – but at the next CBBA meeting it might be an idea to propose a league table of raffle winners. We would walk it! By the way many thanks for Doreen Collins and Jan Cockroft for sharing raffle duties and providing the booty for only Onyx members to take home. PS ladies - Any chance of a tumble drier in the raffle next week… I hate mine with a passion!!
It is hard to pick the team for star billing this week as both Mick Browlow, Ian Jackson and their respective triples did Onyx proud, but in differing ways.
On rink seven, and with Gill Johnson in the land of her fathers, Ian Jackson stepped in to skip the ever dependable Mike ( I’ve cracked the narrow side at last! ) Wynne and Sadie Carr to a comfortable victory 23-10. Whilst rarely spectacular this pairing keep grinding out the results. Well done!
The spectacular stuff was left to the trio on rink four. Bill (only a few touchers this week) Garrett, Jill (with a J and no B’s!) Nobbs and Mick Brownlow were nipping and tucking until the 17th end when Gung Ho Mick hatched a masterplan. “If that one goes we could get a seven” says Mick with his normal lack of self confidence. Picture the scene - The rink was hushed, eyes were closed (including Mick’s we all ask ???), the wood is released and bingo the Bear’s wood is taken out as clean as a nut. A true four pointer of a wood for not only was victory sealed for the Javea triple, but it impact on the overall shot difference was pivotal.
Phew … After all that excitement it’s down to earth with a bump time, for alas the triples of David White and Derek Lutz were unable to bring home the bacon ( more like the scrag end this week ) as they tumbled 24-19 and 21-12 respectively.
The friendlies were shared one a piece. Brian certainly has the crowing rights in the Bolger household this week as his triple, completed by George Holman and Dave Wood cantered to a 24-12 win. The wizard is back! Meanwhile on rink three Emily, Joy Jowett and Olive Lutz fell at the first, and were soundly beaten.
So with about a third of the season gone, by hook or by crook Onyx are doing pretty well being just about camped in the top half of the league. Keep at team mates, and who knows, we may be able to split the other two Javea teams come the end of the season.
Next match – BBC Lions at home on Monday
