Javea Green Bowls Club - Week Ending 15th November
Sponsored by Matrix 35 Finance
This week we had two home Winter League matches & two good results. On Sunday we played La Siesta in the re-arranged game and took all 10 points & a victory in the Berleen Trophy. On Wednesday it was not quite so good, but we still collected 8 points against Finca Guila, but unfortunately lost the Berleen match. Overall it has been a good, solid start to the season, with 28 points amassed out of a possible 40 & each team winning a share of the games. Captain Jim Fletcher is fortunate that Javea have 30 players keen to play in the Winter League, but has the unenviable task of team selection! Next week we have the short but tough trip to our neighbours BBC.
On Monday Opals turned their match against BBC Tigers around in dramatic fashion. After 14 ends it looked odds on a deflating 8-2 loss, but with some great shots & determined play, victory was well & truly snatched from the jaws of defeat. Anne Moon has stepped down from the Captaincy of the Opals & we wish incoming Captain Martin Hughes, good luck for the rest of the season.
On Thursday it was Onyx who took centre stage at the Inn on the Green & they completed a good week for the Club, with a 6-4 win against the Albir Bears. This week saw a winning return to action for Ian Jackson, as he stepped in for Gill Johnson & a spectacular win for Mick Brownlow's team. On the 17th end a close fought game was nearing its' conclusion, when "Gung Ho" Mick spotted an opening. Having consulted his team with "if I take that out we could get 7", he duly closed his eyes, fired his wood & took the Bear out clean as a nut! Not only was victory sealed but the overall shot difference also belonged to the Onyx. The friendlies shared the spoils, but bragging rights in the Bolger household go to Brian this week as he won but Emily lost.
The Saturday Triples is progressing nicely & after 5 games Match & More top the table with the maximum 10 points. Well done to you, but as the early pacesetters, I am sure every other team will be gunning for you, so watch your backs!
Enjoy your bowling.

A winning start to the week, for both Quartz & Onyx in the Northern League & perhaps more importantly blue skies & sunshine! The Quartz gained an 8-2 home win over Finca Guila with the winning skips of Graham Muir, Terry Wheeler & stand-in Captain Ken Davey. The early ends belonged to the home team, but as Finca became more accustomed to the rinks, so the games got tighter. However Quartz regained the upper hand & eventually won with a shot difference of 27. Captain Ken believes this win keeps us very close to the top of the league after 7 games, well done to the whole squad, keep it up it's a long season.
Onyx returned to winning ways with a 6-4 win at El Cid Swords. Birthday boy David White skipped his trio to a fine 23-13 win & this capped a fine fight back after slipping into an early deficit. Gill Johnson had no such trouble as her team led all the way to win 17-11, however the thriller of the day saw Mick Brownlow, Bill Garrett & Beryl Nobbs, take 5 shots in the last 2 ends to steal the points with a 14-13 victory. Alas the losing rink were swept aside by Javea escapee Derek Marshall, to such an extent that the points for shot difference were also conceded to the home team. The spoils were shared this week in the friendly games. In closing, Onyx send their best wishes to Jill & Gerald Johnson who celebrate their Golden Wedding & to Peter Ellis & ex Javea stalwart Dave Humble, both of who's health has taken a dip in recent times. Many things in life are more important than bowls, but without doubt the wellbeing of our friends is paramount.
The Winter League team returned to action with a difficult trip to pre-season favourites Greenlands & only managed to gather 2 points. Congratulations to Dennis Sperden, Alan Phillips, Pat Metcalfe & Joyce Tebbenham who held off the home team to win 17-10. Sheri Fletchers' rink had their victory celebrations dashed, as a 13-6 lead was wiped out by Greenlands with an 11 shot salvo over the last 4 ends. Amongst the gloom of defeat we were delighted to welcome Spanish international Nick Cole into the Winter League team & he made an immediate impact by winning 2 prizes in the raffle! Silly me thought he was here to bowl! The Berleen Teams picked up the points following a win for Ken Aylings' team & a hard fought 12-12 draw for Joan Moss & her team, well done to everyone.
I am able to end this weeks report on a very positive note, as Javea Green are able to send heartiest congratulations to Sheri Fletcher, who has been selected to represent Spain in South Africa next year.
Enjoy your bowling.
